Parched Earth
paintings 2017-2018
Continuing to work on wood, in these paintings I have begun to experiment with different media, using various pastes, including pumice, mixed into the acrylic ground to create rougher surfaces.
I also explore a different range of colours, resulting in a different palette.
As always, I have allowed the surface, texture and incidental marks to prompt my imagination, suggesting imagery and themes.

The resulting paintings have a parched, desiccated quality.
This is a post apocalyptic landscape, harbouring remnants and fragments of life.
Some whole characters emerge, with associations, memories and allusions to different cultures and histories, creating a sense of the archeological as I excavate the imagination.
